President Brian Tschirhart, having returned from his vacation with his extended family in the Bahamas with a relaxed vacation smile on his face and sporting a handsome beard, presided once again.

The invocation was given by Steve Dutton. Scott Richey led the Pledge of Allegiance. 

 

Visiting Rotarians and Guests:

Elena Bonelli, an honorary member of a Rotary Club in Rome, Italy. She is an international actress and singer, promoting Roman songs; and is the official voice of the Italian National Anthem. She sang a little for us with a lovely voice.

 

 

New Member Induction:

Tish Showell is sponsored by Steve Dutton, who has known her for several years. She is the manager of 50 Biscayne Condominiums, a mother of two, and is very service-oriented. Past President Phil Seipp inducted her into our membership. Welcome, Tish, to the Rotary Club of Miami family and to the Rotary world family. We hope you enjoy connecting with us as we work together on service projects.

 

1. On August 25, 2022 at 6 PM join us for a Poseidon Sunset Cruise, leaving from behind the downtown Hyatt Hotel in downtown Miami. We still have room so if you are interested in going, please advise Diane Landsberg as soon as possible. There will be NO LUNCH MEETING ON AUGUST 25!

2. Environmental:

   1. Past President Robert Bull is heading up the first ever District 6990 Environmental Sustainability Action Committee (ESDAC). Our district is one of only three world-wide to have such a committee. He held a Zoom meeting in the evening on Thursday, August 18^th, for all of those interested in the committee.

   2. On September 17^th, 2022, there will be a beach cleanup at many different locations throughout Miami-Dade County for participants to choose from. Details will follow.

3. On September 1^st, 2022, Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge Steven Leifman, Chief Justice of the Mental Health Court for the 11^th Judicial Circuit of Florida, will be speaking to us at our luncheon meeting at the Miami Yacht Club. He has been our speaker at least two times since 2000. Please check our club’s website calendar (www.miamirotary.org) for more information about upcoming events and speakers.

4. A used clothing collection to be held in September. More information will be provided.

5. In November, we will be collecting and providing Feed Miami with non-perishable food.

6. In December, we will be collecting toys and children’s books.

 

Today’s Speaker:

 

Past President Norby Rudel, Membership Chair, was our speaker today. He gave a spirited, enthusiastic and informative presentation of the different types of membership and new initiatives. The audience participated in providing all the benefits of membership that we offer to individuals and corporations. Our club has two corporate memberships: Northern Trust Bank and FIU.

One new member initiative in District 6990 has been provided by Karen Clarke of the Karen Clarke Corporate Foundation. She is a member of the Arch Klumph Society, having donated $250,000 to the Rotary International Foundation. That donation entitles her to 125 Paul Harris Awards to be given to whomever she chooses. She has opted to donate the points to District 6990 to recognize and to honor outstanding people in District 6990 who already are doing outstanding work in the geographical area of our district with a Paul Harris Fellow Award.

Dave Skinner is delighted that his son is coming down to speak and to give a presentation at the Miller School of Medicine and will be visiting with him and Linda next week.

Norby Rudel is happy to meet our visiting Rotarian, Elena Bonelli, and especially to see our long-time member, John Harrison, at our meeting once again.

Marcia Brod is looking forward to her and husband Lenny’s September cruise on the Ohio River, traveling through the Midwest.
