President Norby Rudel called the meeting to order. Norm Kassoff gave a special commemorative speech for James Hutson, M.D., who was an honorary member of our club and grandson of James Jackson, M.D, and invocation. James Hutson just passed away. Amelia Bonilla led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

Visiting Rotarians and Guests 

Rick Miller introduced our sole visiting Rotarian, Bennie M. Shaw, of the Rotary Club of Mandarin, Jacksonville, Florida. There were no guests.

Happy $$$$$$$$$$$$$

Enthusiasm was high and the members recounting their tales of happiness were quite alluring. Cameron Sisser had the pleasure of collecting Happy Dollars.

  • Amelia Bonilla reported that the newly formed Rotaract Club at one of our local med schools is up and running.

  • Shirley Pardon announced that she is having her hip replaced on October 11th. We wish you a speedy recovery.

  • Jay Almeida was happy for Robert Bull’s accomplishments as Community Service Director of our club: so far, our club has had 27 completed projects this year.

  • Robin and Susan Shelley were celebrating their 52nd wedding anniversary today. Here’s to many more years of wedded happiness!

  • Phil Seipp was glad to be seeing so well without glasses for the first time in his life after his first cataract surgery.

  • Robert Bull promoted the “Socktober” sock drive to collect socks for homeless people of all ages. He reported that Renel Noel is now the advisor to the newly formed Rotaract Club of Little Haiti.

  • Diane Stieber is happy to be back in Miami and that she had a wedding for her third daughter.

  • Norby Rudel shared his delight with a baseball game outcome (as a SF fan, he was happy LA lost)

Business Announcements

  • Diane Landsberg announced that we will have a combined meeting with the Coconut Grove Rotary Club on Oct. 24th, on World Polio Day, at which Norm Kassoff will be speaking; that the club’s Halloween party will be at Diane’s house on October 31st, in lieu of a lunch meeting that day; and on November 16th, our club will participate in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in honor of Carol Kassoff. Clipboards were passed around for signing up for these events.

  • Robert Bull announced that Miami High Interactors and our Miami Dade College Rotaractors will be helping to plant a vegetable garden at the YWCA event for community residents.

  • RYLA will be held in Islamorada on Feb. 20, 2020. Our club will sponsor three students to attend this important leadership training.

  • The Golf Ball drop will be early next year. Dave Anderson will be handling the ticket sales. The cost of every ticket purchased by a member will count towards the purchaser’s EREY. Also, you may get a free ticket based on the amount of money you have paid already for EREY this year. Phil Seipp will be calculating that and informing the members.

  • Noreen Timoney is out of the hospital and is home recovering. We miss her and wish her well.

  • Ted Malinin has a new pacemaker, which was successfully installed.

Speaker

Norm Kassoff proudly introduced his daughter, Beryl Sue Correia, as today’s speaker. Sue Correia, as she prefers to be known, has been a dental hygienist for the past 6 years, and in 2017-2018, she was president of the Florida Dental Hygienists’ Association. Sue dedicated today’s presentation to her beloved mother, Carol Kassoff. Since her mother’s death, Sue has made it her mission to educate people about Alzheimer’s disease.

Many diseases can or may originate from dental health problems, including Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, oral cancer, and respiratory diseases. Dental providers can detect many health issues. Studies show that a bacteria originating in the mouth may be involved in the development of Alzheimer’s. This bacteria spreads to the brain, which causes the buildup of the plaques in the brain that destroy memory.

Healthy gums should not be inflamed or bleed.

Hospital-acquired pneumonia can be caused by leaving dentures in the mouth too long or by lack of dental care while in a hospital or nursing home. Sue has first-hand information about hospitals and nursing homes not providing proper dental health care to the residents.
