Past-President Scott Richey, ably filling in for President Phil Seipp, who is whale-watching in Maine, called the meeting to order.

Jay Almeida gave an invocation and Dave Anderson led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.

Guests and Visitors were introduced by Linda Singer:
  • Bruce Robinson is with Odrino USA and a guest of Renel Noel. He is a Project Engineer for water systems;
  • Nelson Jimenez is Operations Manager at Core & Main LP and also Renel’s guest;
  • Dr. Thomas K. Pinder is President of the Black Police Precinct & Courthouse Museum.

Happy $$$$$$ were collected by Diane Landsberg:
  • Scott Richey had a birthday this past Monday. Son and daughter are also October born. Naturally, the power went off when in-laws arrived to celebrate, so the party moved to Orlando;
  • Randy Lichtman was happy that Rotary Leadership Institute is this weekend! He'll be a discussion leader this time around;
  • Angel Rodriguez presented the Club with a banner from the Rotary Club of San Juan Puerto Rico, now in their 100th year. He was proud to report that his son is now a Lieutenant Commander;
  • Robert Bull had a great time at Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza Wednesday night cheering on our own Norby Rudel as he performed;
  • Linda Singer was happy that everyone arrived safely in today's stormy conditions. She is recovering nicely from her accident;
  • Renel Noel is happy to have his friends Bruce and Nelson visiting today. He is also looking forward to his trip to Haiti next week;
  • Robin Shelley was glad to report that his sister had an aortic valve replaced successfully. After complications a stent was placed and she is doing well;
  • Norby Rudel thanked his Rotary friends for coming to Anthony's and providing their support and encouragement.

Announcements
  • Angel Rodriguez finally received his red badge!
  • Karla Santos was inducted today by Robin Shelley as the newest member of the Rotary Club of Miami. Congratulations Karla!

Today’s Speaker

  • Ray Baker is Director of the Miami-Dade Public Library System;
  • There are 50 branch locations serving 2.5 MM residents;
  • The Library still serves paper books, in addition to all the various forms of digital media provided;
  • Many patrons need guidance on computer use so the Library offers training at various levels;
  • The Library System is getting away from fines and other things that keep people from coming to the Library. Reducing negative customer interactions positively influences current & potential users;
  • Libraries look very different today, they are upgrading to be more of a 21st century meeting place;
  • YOUmediaMiami provides a space to empower youth to explore technology;
  • YOUmakeMiami provides a Makerspace to learn everything from sewing to 3D printing, video & music production, painting and multimedia.
  • In addition to the traditional Bookmobile, the Library now has a Technobus mobile computer lab;
  • A co-working area will be opening before year-end at the West Kendall Regional Library, providing basic “office” space and tech equipment for professionals  or budding entrepreneurs on-the-go.
