The Miami Yacht Club

President Tim Ryan opened the meeting welcoming everyone and admitting he has failed at one goal he established for this year. He aimed to start every meeting at 12:15pm, but he has been unable to get things going at that time. It’s important to acknowledge that no matter the time started, meetings have been productive, fun and engaging! Keep trying Tim!!

Cory Gittner gave the invocation sharing the four Keys to Success for life in general and the future of our club. They are: 1) Strength; 2) Creativity; 3) Courage and 4) Kindness. Linda Singer led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.
 

Guests and Visitors were introduced by Incoming President Oliver Ruiz.

  • Carter Parsley came to the meeting a second time, today as a guest of Robin and Susan Shelley. She shared a Rotary item she found at home – a cookbook created by a Rotary Club in Hong Kong and used as a fundraiser for Polio Plus many years ago.
  • Andrew Sommerlatte, a member of the US Southern Command, was visiting again. He has been approved for membership and will soon be the newest Rotarian in the Rotary Club of Miami!

  • Marcia Brod reported that there will soon be another Rotarian in the family. Her daughter, Stephanie, will soon be joining the Downtown Gainesville Rotary Club.
  • Norby Rudel was thrilled to have been re-invited to give the keynote speech at the Kansas 911 State Conference.
  • Phil Seipp encouraged everyone to come to the FIU TBM Scholarship Recipient pinning ceremony on Friday, January 15. He also shared a binder that FIU prepared that has bios on all the recipients and thank you letters from each of them.
  • Robin Shelley was happy to be back from cruising and also glad to have Carter Parsley at the luncheon.
  • Oliver Ruiz spent a wonderful day with his daughter exploring the Perez Art Museum Miami. He’s also looking forward to the Club’s 100th anniversary celebration during his year as president. Finally, he did not win the Power Ball Lottery, but felt that he was always a winner with good friends like those at Rotary.
  • Renel Noel went above and beyond when, as a reservist, the Coast Guard called for his assistance. He gave up a lot of his own time and in the end was not needed, but he certainly displayed the Rotary motto – Service Above Self.
  • Randy Lichtman invited everyone to the opening of the Gibson Center in Coconut Grove on Wednesday, January 20. The center for the elderly will have 4 classrooms that Miami Dade College will use for continuing education classes.
  • Jair Almeida thanked President Tim for conducting such a good board meeting.

Announcements

  • Marcia Brod reported that the Thomas Brown McClelland Trust had received a total of $250 in donations from Alumni as a result of the latest Alumni newsletter.
  • The Rotary Club of Miami cruise will be sailing on Friday, February 5. If you want to get in on the fun and good deal contact Royal Caribbean Cruise lines today.
  • The Annual Peace Conference will be held Saturday, February 27. Club members are encouraged to attend.
  • The winning raffle ticket for the 3-year lease on the Lexus will be held on March 17. Please continue to sell the remaining tickets.
  • Membership Chair Dave Anderson shared the new packets available for prospective members. The packets contain details about the Club and Rotary. He urged everyone to think about who they know that would benefit from Rotary and invite them to a meeting.
  • Robin Shelley has tickets for the District 6990 Helicopter Golf Ball Drop. Tickets are $25 and contributions will be credited to your RI account. Checks should be made out to: Rotary Foundation HGBD.

  • Mayte Canino is the Regional organizer for Planned Parenthood of South, East and North Florida. She is responsible for organizing advocacy campaigns, cultivating relationships with coalition partners, and leading volunteer programs in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties.
  • Planned Parenthood of South, East and North Florida believes that reproductive self-determination and the right to privacy are core human freedoms. Their mission is to provide comprehensive sexual health care through the provision of clinical services, education and advocacy.
  • They have 11 health centers throughout the Florida region that are dedicated to providing services that are affordable, accessible and available to all women, men and youth in the community, regardless of the individual's income, race, marital status, religion, sexual orientation or residence. Their goal is to create the healthiest generation ever.
  • Since 1971, the organization’s educational programs and low-cost medical and family planning services have served more than half-a-million patients, including at-risk teenagers, young male and female professionals, couples, and women in menopause.
  • Mayte shared that 1 in 5 women will come to Planned Parenthood some time during their lifetimes. The organization provides free services, without Federal funding. They also do not receive funds from the State of Florida. They are supported through grants, private donations and they also now collect fees via insurance for services rendered.

REMINDERS

  • Interact Clubs are collecting lightly-used stuffed animals – please check and see if you have any that need new homes and bring during the next two weeks.
  • Peace Conference attendees will be collecting children’s books – bring to a future meeting.
  • NO LUNCH MEETING THURSDAY JANUARY 21. We will be gathering in the evening instead at 5:30pm as guests of Juan Torres and Sabadell Bank for an evening get-together. The bank’s address is 1111 Brickell Avenue. It should be lots of fun. FREE valet parking - park at the Marriott (entrance on 12th St) and bring your ticket to 30th Floor, so that it can be stamped. Tip to the valet not included. Food and drink will be provided courtesy of the Rotary Club.
