With no regular lunch meeting on Thursday, October 25, here is a recap of recent events:
On Saturday, October 20, Linda Singer, Robin & Susan Shelley, Phil Seipp, Noreen Timoney, Brian & Kathy Tschirhart, and Diane Landsberg attended the 50th celebration of the “200 Club of Greater Miami”. This wonderful organization’s sole purpose is to provide for the families of law enforcement and fire fighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty. They give the spouse of a deceased Officer or Fire Fighter a check when the death occurs and give the dependent minor children an annual birthday remembrance check, with a special gift check on their 18th birthday.
On Thursday, October 25 President Dave Skinner, Linda Singer, Phil Seipp, Noreen Timoney, Robert Bull, Rick Miller, Bunny Uriarte, Karla & Scott Richey, Jessica Almeida and Diane Landsberg attended the “See the Light” luncheon put on by the Miami Lighthouse and our members Virginia Jacko & Cameron Sisser. We experienced a motivational keynote address from a remarkable young man who has benefited by the programs at the Lighthouse and an inspirational video about their programs, and we were inspired by the vocal talents of a vision impaired soloist and choir. We are proud that our club was one of the founding forces of the Lighthouse, and we will continue to support their excellent work.
In lieu of our Thursday lunch, the Club hosted at no charge to members a “World Polio Day” brunch on Sunday, October 28 at the home of Diane Landsberg. The brunch was a wonderful success with 50 members and guests.
Past President Norm Kassoff, a survivor of a polio attack in his childhood, delivered a most interesting report on the history of polio, the development of the vaccines and the current status of the fight to eliminate the disease entirely.
It was also an honor to have DGE Ray Williams in attendance to receive our Foundation check for $3000 for End Polio Now. We also collected an additional $155 in donations that will be forwarded to the Rotary Foundation along with the $3000.
We also inducted Frank Fernandez, Interact Club Advisor at Young Men’s Preparatory Academy as an Honorary Member of Miami Rotary.
This week, we return to the Miami Yacht Club for a regular lunch meeting on Thursday, November 1 and our speakers will be Director Frank Fernandez and Dr. Marcus St. John of the American Heart Association.
