The Rote - July 21, 2022

Miami Yacht Club and via Zoom

Scribe: Linda Singer

President Brian Tschirhart called the meeting to order both in person at the Miami Yacht Club and on Zoom. Robin Shelley gave the invocation. Scott Richey led us in pledging allegiance to the flag.

Norm Kassoff shared a snippet of history of the predecessor to Jackson Memorial Hospital. Our first club president and a founder, James Jackson, had a small hospital built on a cattle pasture. Norm related a humorous story about curious cows looking in the window of the surgery room while it was in use.

President Brian introduced our current Rotary 6990 District Governor, Michael Kesti. Michael briefly informed us of Rotary District 6990's District Conference cruise on Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas to Freeport planned for November 4 through November 7, 2022. To take advantage of the best discounted rates, it is important to reserve rooms in advance. More details will follow by email.

Today’s Program

In the 1990’s, a generous donation from John and Grace DeLury funded the Wm. R. Robbins Jr. Interact Scholarship Fund at Miami Senior High School. The Rotary Club of Miami disperses the funds to deserving graduating seniors to help with college expenses.

Amelia Bonilla, Youth Services Chair, presented the DeLury Award to Emily Chouza for winning the 4 Way Test Contest. Emily read her winning essay. The next step in her education is starting college at FIU. We wish her much success!!

Happy Dollars

The following people made donations:

Phil Seipp, who already has signed up for the District Conference Cruise;

Scott Richey, who returned from a wonderful family vacation in Costa Rica;

Randy Lichtman, who was happy about the many Miami Dade College students interested in joining the Miami Dade College Rotaract Club;

Robin Shelley, who is looking forward to this year’s District Conference in Orlando. He will be one of the honorees selected to the Rotary District 6990 Hall of Fame;

Michael Kesti in honor of Susan Shelley’s birthday;

Brian Tschirhart, for the energy and excitement DG Michael Kesti and the students brought to the meeting.
