The Rote – April 5, 2018
The Miami Yacht Club

President Phil Seipp called the first meeting of April to order.  Dave Anderson gave the invocation and Diane Stieber led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.

Guests and Visitors were introduced by Marcos Menendez, who first shared some insights from a study on “luck” – there are four things that help optimize one’s luck:

1) Having an optimistic outlook on life

2) An expectation of receiving good luck

3) A good network of friends and associates

4) The necessity of actually taking the bet or chance.

Our guests today included:

  • Maria Cristina Bentancourt is a Key Account Manager at Noi Caffe;
  • Danielle Spera was visiting the club again on this visit to Miami.  She is a member of the Rotary Club of Prinz Eugen Vienna in Austria and is CEO of the Jewish Museum of Vienna;
  • Mark Kirn is retired and on the Board of Gulf Cryo.  He is a long-time friend of Diane Landsberg and lives in Spain.  Mark also brought along his daughter, Alessandra¸ who is working with local Miami jewelry designer Luis Morais doing public relations.

Announcements:

  • There will be a board meeting next Thursday, April 12 at 10:30.  All members are welcome to attend;
  • Stay tuned for more info on UM Baseball Night on Friday, 4/20
  • 15 members are registered for the Rotary Leadership Institute on April 21.
  • A good group from the club will be attending the District Training Assembly on April 28.

Happy $$$$$$$$ were collected by Amelia Bonilla

  • Amelia added the first Happy $$$$ for celebrating her third year at Northern Trust and also for having been asked to serve on the bank’s Investment Committee;
  • Shirley Pardon was thrilled to be out of her sick bed, back to good health and at today’s meeting;
  • Marcia Brod had a wonderful Passover visiting family in Washington DC and not having to do anything to prepare for the Seder.  Her tours of DC were also a lot of fun;
  • Arleen Terrinoni received a club banner from the San Juan Capistrano Rotary Club that she visited on her last trip to California;
  • Noreen Timoney missed the meeting last week but now is prepared for the next hurricane with new impact resistant windows in her condo;
  • Renel Noel was so glad to be back.  He had an extremely successful trip to Haiti where he installed two more toilets and got a water pump in working order for the local hospital;
  • Jair Almeida is going to Orlando to have dinner with Patrick Aliu.  He also shared that his daughters are both in the midst of pageant competitions;
  • Diane Landsberg was glad to have Mark Kirn at today’s meeting;
  • Robin Shelley was glad that Northern Trust has brought new members Angela Deggs and Amelia Bonilla to the Club.  He enjoys going to the bank and really knowing his bankers;
  • Jamie Tobin was enjoying spring break with her family and also the raise she received before the vacation started making it easier to return to work afterwards;
  • Norby Rudel was happy that Renel got the pump working and is thrilled to have finally finished the deck on his home.

Today’s Speaker was introduced by Shirley Pardon

  • Dr. Kelsey Brenner, DC, is an Integrative Health Coach at South Florida Integrative Health;
  • The facility provides individualized treatments for mental, neurological, physical, and nutritional health;
  • Using state of the art equipment Dr. Brenner uncovers the source of problems and personalizes a treatment specific to an individual’s needs. They specialize in brain injury, neuro-developmental disorders, neurodegenerative disorders, neuropsychiatric conditions, sports performance optimization, metabolic disorders, and Lyme disease;
  • Neuroplasticity refers to the ability of the brain and spinal cord to change and reorganize itself. Not so many years ago, mainstream neuroscience and neurological medicine argued that neuroplasticity was limited to early childhood due to the “sensitive period” of development and growth. It is now known that brain remodeling can occur on a large scale at any age in life.
  • Three things are important for keeping neurons in the brain healthy and growing – oxygen, food and stimulation.

Our 50/50 began today at $918, Rick Hernandez sold $96 bringing the pot to $1014. Rick had the first ticket drawn but did not draw the Ace. He earned $25 toward his EREY & the pot starts at $989 next week with 24 cards remaining.

Norby Rudel ended another enthusiastic meeting by leading everyone in the 4-Way Test.
