PRESIDENT NOREEN TIMONEY opened the meeting and welcomed everyone.

 

An invocation was given by JAY ALMEIDA.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by STEVE DUTTON.

 

President Noreen asked that we pray for the world that is in turmoil both inside and outside our borders.

 

 

PRESIDENT NOREEN played a video of some highlights about this day (June 2^nd) throughout history, including the video of the Queen’s coronation in 1953, Grover Cleveland’s marriage in the White House in 1886, and Babe Ruth’s retirement in 1935 after a tremendous baseball career.

 

SHIRLEY PARDON, our British member, spoke about the Queen on her Platinum Jubilee which occurred on this day in history.

 

 

PRESIDENT NOREEN and MATT HAGMAN, our guest speaker, talked about the influence that Babe Ruth, who retired on this day in history, had on their home towns…New York for NOREEN and Boston for MATT. MATT related the story about the “curse of the Bambino” plunging the Boston Red Sox into decades of losses in their quest to win the World Series after Babe Ruth was sold to the N.Y Yankees.

 

 

 

The CORAL REEF PROJECT has been postponed until a future date due to a date conflict. We hope to reschedule when we can have enough members attend and join this fabulous coral reef hands-on project through either diving and planting corals in the water or engaging in a science project on the ship.

 

 

TREE PLANTING IN CRANDON PARK. Rotary have now planted over 900 trees, with the last planting May 14^th.

 

JUNE 4^TH Action day to end Plastic

 

ROBERT BULL asked everyone to send in pictures of environmental clean ups for June 5^th. Check ROBERT’s emails for information to participate and win prizes while doings something for our community.

 

 

 

President Noreen introduced Matt Hagman, today’s guest speaker, with a detailed review of his jobs and accomplishments beginning with his work on the Miami Herald and Knight Foundation. Matt is now at the Beacon Council as Executive Vice President, Opportunity Miami.

He talked to members about his new initiative OPPORTUNITY MIAMI. This was launched 6 months ago and is aimed at several areas of focus for development. In the 6 months it has seen real job growth in Miami. The purpose is to build a platform to secure our future in every aspect of life and this initiative has been promoting entrepreneurship in many communities and with diverse groups of people through Innovation Entrepreneurship.

One of the “start ups” has been a Salmon farm near Homestead. PRESIDENT NOREEN will be connecting with MATT to try to schedule a visit to the Salmon Farm for our Club.

MATT answered a number of questions from our members, and all appreciated the wonderful information he shared with us as well as his dedication to and efforts for our community.

PRESIDENT NOREEN thanked MATT for speaking, presented him with a Certificate of Appreciation and promised that we will plant a tree in his honor at our Club’s next tree planting.

The meeting came to order at 12:31. President Noreen Timoney welcomed everyone.

 

Robin Shelley gave an invocation. He expressed how sad a time it is to be listening to the news in Texas. We pray today to help ease the pain of those involved in this terrible act of crime. We also ask that those affected be surrounded by parents, family friends and peace healing love. Please bring an end to senseless acts. We are holding them in our prayers.

 

Noreen commented that it has been a sad day and a sad week. She urged we come together now and reaffirm our allegiance to our flag. She reminded everyone that as we go into the Memorial Holiday weekend, we should remember those victims at Robb Elementary in Texas and also the military and first responders who have helped and continue to protect us. All have contributed to our safety, and many have paid the ultimate price to protect us and keep us free.

 

Irish author Bram Stoker's masterpiece Dracula was released for sale in London. Dracula was not only a sensation in its own right but inspired a genre of horror that remains immensely popular today.

May is Haitian heritage month. Robert Bull discussed Haitian history.

 

Noreen commented about the tragedy in Texas and asked that we pray for the world and those within our country borders.

 

Here is a photo of our tree planting on May 14^th. The Club has planted 900 in total since beginning. This is such an important way to sustain our Club’s environmental focus.

 

25 people will be able to participate in a coral reef restoration with the University of Miami on June 12^th in the morning in the diving location in Key Biscayne. An email will go out later with details. Diane Landsberg has offered to host a lunch at her house after the restoration project.

 

June 4^th is Worldwide End Plastic Soup Action Day. June 5^th is environmental day. Send in pictures to Robert Bull of how you are helping to save the planet. There will be prizes!

 

Saturday, June 25^th is the Installation of our 106^th President Brian Tschirhart . Please Join us for dinner at Miami Police Benevolence Hall. RSVP Diane Landsberg.

Thursday, June 30^th will be President Noreen’s Farewell meeting. This will be an in-person meeting. Please join us as President Noreen finishes up her 2021 -2022 presidency of our Club.

Guest Speaker

Jay Almeida introduced the Club’s premiere investment officer and past president Scott Richey.

• Scott has been in Rotary 15 years, and it is a big part of his life.

• He has been with Northern Trust for 38 years as of this summer.

• He shared Northern is thinking about the market and shared several financial chart slides, highlighting the most significant points.

• Scott reviewed trends, how to invest, risks and how the marketing is now performing. He believes the CPI is leading everything else. A key take away is that the market volatility will subside.

• Real assets commodities have not been slowed. He is not predicting a recession. Reviewed historical data. No panicking. No one is being advised to get out of the market.

President Noreen gave Scott a certificate of appreciation and the Club will plant a tree in Scott’s honor. Noreen and Jay thanked Scott for giving us confidence that things are more optimistic.

 

A video was presented, reminding of us how much things have changed in Ukraine showing the planning of a wonderful conference prior to the war. There are multiple Rotary Clubs in the country, and we should keep them all in our thoughts. Rotary is a partnership without borders.

Happy $$$$$ today were contributed by all to the efforts in Ukraine and as a thank you to Scott Richey’s presentation. Those contributing included: Stephan Schenk, Miryam Cortina, Steve Dutton (who was also happy to be back home from his cruise), Robin and Susan Shelley, Brian Tschirhart, Phil Seipp, Noreen Timoney, Carlos Bonadies, Scott Richey, and Diane Landsberg.

 

TBM Scholarships to be Distributed

Phil Seipp announced that a total $256,500 is going to be distributed to all 76 students who interviewed. Distributions were in the amounts of $4,000, $3,500, and $2,500.

 

President Noreen shared some reflections in light of this week’s tragedy and in remembrance of the Memorial Day Holiday and the meaning behind it.

 

 

Noreen & Jay reminded everyone to renew their Rotary memberships and RSVP for the June 25^th Installation dinner.

Oliver Ruiz led everyone in the Four Way Test.
