Meeting at City Hall Restaurant, 20th and Biscayne Blvd.
 
President Diane Landsberg opened the meeting welcoming everyone to the “Greatest Rotary Club in the World.”  Robert Bull gave an invocation and Robin Shelley lead the group in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.
Scott Richey introduced the visitors and guests at today’s meeting.
Diane shared a host of announcements:
  • Pre-Valentines party – Crepes & Wine – Thursday, February 12th from 5:30-8:30pm.  This will be held at The Party House at the Cloisters (home to Robin and Susan Shelley), 3471 Main Highway in Coconut Grove. RSVP is required so security can be notified - contact either Diane: 305.976.7521 or Susan: 305.794.7277. Members and spouse are free, guests - $25/couple.
  • TBM Interviews have been set up for Saturday, March 7, 14 and 21.  All members should sign up to take part in this important activity.  The students are simply amazing.  Arrival time is 7:30am. Coffee and donuts are provided.  Every member should try to participate at least once over the three weekends.
  • A new feature for TBM participants is being developed – The TBM Society.  More details will be forthcoming.
  • We will be meeting next Thursday, 1/29 at City Hall once again.
  • Norby Rudel celebrated a birthday this month – he kept to himself which one it was.
  • Several members celebrated their anniversary in Rotary this month.  Most notable was Don Van Orsdel who has been a Rotarian now for 37 years!!!!
  • The District Golf Ball Drop is coming up – last chance to buy tickets.
  • Nomination ballots have been mailed.  Be sure to return them and participate in the future of the Club.
  • Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) will be held in Ft. Lauderdale on March 28.
  • The Club’s 3rd Annual Peace Conference, held in conjunction with Miami Dade College, will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2015.  All Miami Rotarians are encouraged to attend and support this important endeavor.
 
Oliver Ruiz collected a load of happy $.  Those who contributed and shared their joy included:
  • Robert Bull was excited about his new job.
  • Humberto Rivera was thrilled to be recovering from successful surgery and happy to announce that the children’s clothing import business he is starting with his wife expanded its line and markets.
  • Phil Seipp previewed the soon to be established TBM Society.
  • Jair Almeida, speaking also for his daughter, were thankful to be alive and healthy after a car accident. 
  • Jenny Huertas was excited to be able to walk to the meeting today from her office.
  • Rob Marshall enjoyed participating in the service project organized by Community Service Chair Renel Noel.  They helped serve 177 meals to folks in need.
  • Marcia Brod was glad to arrive at City Hall on the Miami Trolley – a free service that has multiple routes in the City of Miami.
  • Robin Shelley – District Foundation Chair – announced two sizeable gifts, one of $250,000 and another of $1 million, were made to the Rotary Foundation.
Speaker
Member Norby Rudel spoke today about the upcoming Peace Conference.  This is the third year for the event that the club and its partner, Miami Dade College, coordinate.  It is to be held on Saturday, January 31, 2015 from 9am-3pm.  Approximately 100 students from local high schools are brought to the Conference held at the downtown campus of Miami Dade College.  Students listen to speakers and participate in numerous group activities in a fun and engaging atmosphere.  Students are encouraged to talk about what disrupts the peace at school, at home and in their own personal interactions.  With the help of trained Rotaract facilitators, the group works towards creating an action project to address some of these issues that can be initiated in their own school.  From past years, this conference has been a lot of fun for the participants, but also very rewarding and productive for everyone.
Rotary Club of Miami members are invited to stop by and support the efforts of Norby, Diane and Randy Lichtman.  The results of their hard work can really make a difference in the students’ lives.
