The Miami Yacht Club
President Dave Skinner called the meeting to order. Marcia Brod gave an invocation and Scott Richey led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.
Guests and Visitors were introduced by Arlene Terrinoni:
- Michael Harper, visiting us again from Delray Beach, was formerly a member of the Washington, D.C. Rotary Club and is looking for a new home club here in South Florida;
- Allen Thompson, a past member of our club;
- Moreno Weilenmann, a repeat visitor from Amsterdam, and a Rotaract member in New York City. Moreno is a student at the Amsterdam School of International Business, studying at the University of Miami.
Announcements:
- Five important events that should be on your calendar:
- Save the dates of March 16, March 23, and March 30 for TBM interviews. This is our biggest service project! We will interview medical students for scholarships. We’ll arrive at the Medical Examiner’s Office at 8:15 a.m. and begin the interviews at 9:00 (look for sign-up sheets!)
- Rotary Leadership Institute, RLI, is March 30. Level 1 is almost filled. If you are interested in attending, let Diane know so she can register you and have the club pay for it;
- The Rotary District BBQ on March 17 from 11:00 to 3:00 will be at Tropical Park. You can sign up through Diane;
- Rotary District Assembly will be held on Saturday, April 13 at Jungle Island. The 2019-2020 Leadership team should all attend as there will be informative training and sharing of ideas;
- Diane spoke about the Night of 1000 Paul Harris Fellows taking place on March 28. We'll have a chance to hear our Bahamian friend, RI President Barry Rassin, speak.
Happy $$$$$$$$$$$$$ were collected by Diane Landsberg:
- Diane Landsberg was happy to have attended the Love of Learning Gala, benefitting an organization supported by the Shelleys;
- Tina Moore was happy;
- Noreen Timoney happily reported that she is now a grandmother for the third time;
- Allen Thompson is happy to be back at The Rotary Club of Miami;
- Jay Almeida was happy to see Allen Thompson;
- Dave Skinner was happy that Michael Harper and Moreno Weilenmann were here for a second time.
OUR SPEAKER: Marcella McCarthy, CEO of Skillied.com
Skillied is a class booking and class management school for local classes. It has a search engine to find classes and to enroll in them. The classes include those for personal enrichment, business, and continuing education, for children and adults. They work with 30 schools in Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Teachers can use it see who has signed up for their classes. Potential students can read reviews on skillied.com posted by other students of the classes and teachers. The feedback helps the teachers, businesses and potential students.
Marcella also talked about the challenges she had to overcome in establishing the business.
50/50:
Renel Noel sold $58 in 50/50 tickets. Renel’s ticket was first picked but he did not draw the Ace of Spades!
The meeting concluded with recitation of the Four-Way Test of the Things We Think, Say or Do.
