WELCOME:  President Norby Rudel rang the bell and welcomed everyone to the 6th meeting of his presidency.  He reminded everyone that the 50/50 was now at $1,771 and to get their tickets now or during the meeting.
 
INVOCATION: Angela Deggs delivered meaningful words of reflection.
 
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE was led by John Carroll.
 
VISITORS & GUESTS were introduced by Oliver Ruiz:
  • Michelle Roome – Norby Rudel’s niece, staying with him for a short time from Maryland;
  • Kupa Madzima is potential member from Zimbabwe is finishing up his studies at FIU;
  • Vanetta Rodgers was visiting from the Rotary Club of Antigua;
  • Joycelyn Belizaire is a Diplomat visiting from a Rotary Club in Haiti;
  • Timothy O. Buchanan is a visiting Rotarian from Ohio with his girlfriend.
  • Leslie Forrest, friend of Diane Landsberg, is a frequent visitor to our Club.
 
BIRTHDAYS:  Celebrating the birthdays of Greg Giddens (8th), Sue Ryan (5th) and Tina Moore (8th)
 
HAPPY $$$$s were collected by Cory Gittner:
  • Dave Skinner was happy to have all the visitors with us today and hopes they will come back;
  • Marcia Brod was happy that the guest speaker for next week will be Lucas Hernandez from Microsoft;
  • Diane Landsberg presented Phil Seipp with a funny mini poster!
She also presented Don Van Orsdel and John Carroll with spouse badges to give to their partners.  Lastly, she presented John Carroll with a Veteran’s pin;
  • Scott Richey was happy to be back from vacation and that the new edition of the Miami Kids magazine has an article on our Rotary Club;
  • Don Van Orsdel was glad to be back at the Club. He felt blessed to have a lovely family, three of whom are working at the florist they have set up at the Funeral Home in Kendall;
  • Brian Tschirhart is back from a vacation with around 20 family members and friends;
  • Noreen Timoney was happy to be here and happy about the speaker’s program and Tim’s welcome input;
  • Norby Rudel was happy for his niece’s visit and that he got to go to the Everglades again – the highlight was driving an Air Boat!
  • Oliver Ruiz was happy for his daughter’s 14th birthday;
  • Vanetta Rodgers was happy to be in Miami at this Rotary club;
  • Jay Almeida was happy to see the Kids magazine article written by Diane Landsberg highlighting our Rotary Club.  Great to see Virginia Jacko here from the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind with Cameron Sisser; 
  • Phil Seipp gave thanks to Dr. Ronald Sackstein, Dean of FIU Medical School, for agreeing to speak at the August 22nd meeting.
 
ANNOUNCEMENTS: 
  • Norby Rudel invited Robert Bull to announce all upcoming events.  These will be circulated by email to all members.  He highlighted immediate upcoming events such as the Food pantry at Homestead on Saturday. He also announced the Alzheimer’s Walk and the Heart Walk both taking place in November.  More details to follow;
  • Rotary University – August 24th.  Sign up on sheet being passed around;
  • RLI is September 21st – everyone encouraged to attend that has not taken the courses;
  • Beach Cleanup scheduled for September 21st.
 
TODAY’S SPEAKER: 
  • Diane Landsberg put on her District hat as Area Governor and addressed the meeting giving an interesting overview of the duties that she carries out in her capacity as Area Governor.
  • It was a fascinating look at the “behind the scenes” of the District officers and the amount of work that they carry out while overseeing the clubs.
  • Diane also recognized Don Van Orsdel, Brian Tschirhart and Norman Kassoff as being part of the 40-year membership Club! 
  • Diane was thanked profusely for her presentation.
 
50/50 DRAW:
  • An additional $208 was collected at today’s meeting bringing the total to $1,979.  Half of this will go to the member holding the winning ticket and drawing the Ace of Spades.  A non member will receive half of today’s amount collected.
  • The winning ticket was held by guest Lesley Forrest but she did not draw the Ace of Spades – so the pot will roll over to the following week.
 
President Norby Rudel thanked all working Rotarians and invited Bunny Uriarte to lead the members in the 4-Way test.
 
He rang the bell and the meeting was adjourned.
