President Brian Tschirhart presided. He announced that Jimmy Smiley, whose birthday is September 15^th, was a patient in a hospital awaiting a bone marrow transplant and wished him well.

In lieu of an invocation, President Brian had the members engage in a moment of silence for remembrance of September 11, 2001.

Maria Rudel led us in the pledge of allegiance.

A video presentation by Past President Norm Kassoff was played. He talked about the Griffitts Award given by our club each year to an outstanding City of Miami law enforcement officer. Norm also told us about the police dog that was so impressive it was given a Paul Harris Fellow!

New Member Induction:

Claudia Marroquin was sponsored by Past President Norby Rudel, who inducted her into our membership. She has been very involved in various foundations and now is a realtor. Welcome, Claudia, to the Rotary Club of Miami family, and to the Rotary world family. We hope you enjoy connecting with us as we work together on service projects.

Brief Announcements:

1. On September 17^th, 2022, there will be a beach cleanup at many different locations throughout Miami-Dade County for participants to choose from.

2. This month we are collecting used clothing. Either bring your donations to Diane at her home or bring them to the next in-person meeting on September 29^th.

3. In October, we are collecting socks for the unhoused.

4. In November, we will be collecting and providing Feed Miami with non-perishable food.

5. In December, we will be collecting toys and children’s books.

Presentation:

Past President Diane Landsberg presented the following members of our club with Lifetime Achievement Awards from the United States signed by President Joe Biden: Jay Almeida, Norby Rudel, Dave Skinner, Robert Bull, and Steve Dutton. Congratulations to all of you for the hours you have spent serving Rotary’s missions.

Speaker:

Steve Dutton introduced our speaker today: Aviel Lemus, M.D. Dr. Lemus is from Miami. He attended Tel Aviv University for medical school and finished his pediatrics training in New Orleans. He moved back to Miami after that. While working in pediatrics, he identified a problem in need of a solution: that of the working parent of a young child who has to miss work every time she or he is called by the pre-school or school to pick up a child who may be sick or in need of medical attention. When children are young, that can happen quite frequently. Schools do this in accordance with guidelines because they are not trained in medical matters. By the time a parent has to pick up the child, bring him or her to see a doctor or ER, and get a prescription if necessary, that parent’s work day has been greatly interrupted. In some cases, the working parent loses pay or sometimes even is fired.

Dr. Lemus says that 90% of the time the child does not have anything wrong that requires the child to go home or to the doctor. Using today’s incredible technology, he started Daycare Doctors to bring medical assessment, testing, and treatment directly to the child’s school. Upon receiving a call from the parent, Daycare Doctors sends out a specially trained nurse to the child’s school with the diagnostic tools and other items. The doctor sees the examination in real time over the internet with extreme high definition and can assess the problem. If a prescription is needed, it can be filled during the appointment.

Past President Linda Singer presented a generous check from Past President Dave Skinner and herself to the Rotary Club of Miami Foundation to provide funds for the Little Haiti Girls’ Football Club.

Arlene Terrinoni contributed in honor of the President’s Lifetime Achievement awardees.

Past President Diane Landsberg is happy for the induction of our newest member, Claudia Marroquin, and for Norby Rudel’s work as Chair of the Membership Committee. She called for volunteers to help with the District Interact Training Conference to be held on October 15^th.
