Miami Waterkeeper’s mission is to defend, protect, and preserve South Florida’s watershed through citizen engagement and community action rooted in sound science and research, working to ensure swimmable, drinkable, fishable water for all. Waterkeeper’s approach combines education and outreach, scientific research, advocacy, and when necessary, legal action. 

Andrew Carter joined Miami Waterkeeper as Research Director in May 2018, and currently works on a number of different research projects. He holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Policy and a J.D., both from the University of Miami, and an M.A. in Marine Conservation and Policy from Stony Brook University. He also holds a B.A. in Geography and Anthropology from Hunter College. In addition to his work at Miami Waterkeeper, he teaches Environmental Law and Policy at the University of Miami’s Abess Center for Ecosystem Science and Policy. Prior to his Ph.D. work, he practiced law in Miami and in his hometown, New York City.
