Dr. Caraballo is the Founding Director of the Maurice A. Ferré Institute for Civic Leadership and an Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Public Policy and Administration in the Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs at Florida International University (FIU). She is also an Affiliate Faculty in the African and African-Diaspora Studies program and Master of Arts in Global Affairs degree program. She is a Past Chair and former Treasurer of the Section for Women in Public Administration (SWPA) for the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA), as well as a past President of the ASPA South Florida Chapter. Presently, Dr. Caraballo serves as the inaugural Director of Teaching for the Black Faculty Association at FIU.

Johann Zietsman: 

Born in the 1950s in South Africa, Johann Zietsman grew up under the Apartheid regime and first got involved in the arts as a brass player in his high school band. This led to his lifelong passion for the transformative value and role of the arts in a community.

After serving in the military, he graduated as an architect, and Johann and his wife, Tharrie, moved to Ithaca, New York, where he completed a Master’s degree in music.

After returning to South Africa in 1982, Johann started a 20-year career in various executive arts management positions, including a music school, two orchestras, an opera and music theatre company, a community arts center, a large multi-theatre performing arts company, and a commercial communications company.

During this time, he was actively involved in the political transformation of his homeland through pioneering work in the arts, resulting in recognition from Mr. Nelson Mandela’s government. As a volunteer, he launched and directed two community youth initiatives, which currently serve about 4000 at-risk children (annually) in townships.

Johann and his family moved to the United States when he was recruited in 2002 by the International Society for the Performing Arts (ISPA), based in New York City. Since June 2007 he served as Executive Director of the Mesa Arts Center, and Director of Arts and Culture for the city of Mesa, Arizona. In December 2009, Johann accepted the position of President and CEO of Arts Commons in Calgary, Canada.

He took up the role of President & CEO of the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami in December 2018.

TBM FIU Pinning Ceremony: Friday, February 11th – FIU TBM pinning ceremony at the campus on SW 8^th St. beginning at 5:00 p.m. If you would like to attend, please notify Diane Landsberg. Westbound traffic can be quite heavy, so please make sure to take that into account by leaving early enough to attend on time.

The Rotary Club of Miami, in partnership with Million Trees Miami, will be working on the restoration of the salt water marsh areas in Crandon Park by planting two hundred (200) green buttonwood trees on Saturday, February 12th. These salt resistant trees and other herbaceous plants will protect the coastline.

You now have the opportunity to have a tree(s) planted in honor or in memory of a loved one. The cost to have one tree planted is $10.00 (cost of two trees is $18.00 -- after the second tree, please add trees in multiples of two). Your donation is tax deductible.
